I think one thing records bring on , is a goal. the mountain to climb. Without records, fishing could be goal-less, like the longest jump, or the longest throw. Thank god i`m not the candidate for England!

totally agree with solehunter , records are there to be broken , and as long as they are backed up by a reputable secondary person / club / tackle shop , then there should be no problem at all , that should rule out any suspision by a second party , hence , the need to catch bigger and better fish as a comp desires !!!!!! personally i always go out to beat records , or personal bests , but hey catching them is another story !!!!!!!!! tight lines ,

The most important records are that of your own, I'm not that bothered if i don't get a PB, but each season i target a particular fish, and try to break my own record. This year i targeted pike, and was lucky enough to catch a PB of 18lb 8oz, it was my first pike of the season, and added 8oz to my best, giving me time to try new fisheries in order to catch an even bigger one. I'll be going to bury hill in the Xmas holidays to try for a 19 pounder, and hopefully a new species in zander. Trying for new goals and better personal achievements surely keeps the interest alive. Tight lines for Xmas

I'm not keen on records as it tends to be bad for the health of the olduns, at least in sea fishing. If I am lucky enough to catch the big one it would be a quick weigh and back in. I'm still not happy when I clean a decent bass and find she has roe, all those potential future fish! Agree with Cuckoo its nice to beat a personal or boat best.

Unless you can travel extensively distance-wise or maybe back in time!!! national records are largely irrelevent. Local records are the ones IMO that matter and then only if it was aimed at,afterall if you caught a 60lb cod fishing would it be a more skillfull capture than a 20lb one,I think not but it was a luckier capture. We should keep records if only to remind us how big fish can grow to. Most records are caught by accident anyway. PB's are a more realistic aim.
