hello people i have a question. arfter fiting my abec 5 bearings in my mag xtra iv been getting the odd fluff ups or 2 might be down to line lay dunno i have my mag setting on 6 but im thinking of fitting the standard bearings back in there i know these will be more slow and controlled but do u reckon its a good idear also do these bearings make alot of noise i got told cuse there metal if ur line lay is abit crap then the vibrations go thro the spool and hit the bearings causing noise might be rong dunno but do u reckon this is a good idear?
thank you!

i've got five penn mags and three of them have abec bearing in them no problm at all, what i have found is that 525's are prone to inbalance on the spool if line is not put on correctly when re-spooling( if your line s uneven while fishing it does'nt seem to make a difference) the way i get over this is to not tie the line to the spool, but use a small piece of tape, you would'nt believe what a diff this make when compared witha knot! on vibration, yes of course any vibration on the spool will travel down the spindle, but should'nt make the bearings themselves noisey.abec bearings only make a diff on casting on the field( but i do find they FEEL smoother on casting.with reel set-up its all about confidence with the reels your using, but when alls said and done, if the reels a little too lively for u try a little rocket grease on the spool bearing.( but this will take away the advantage of changing the bearing in the first place.I myself have never changed the bearing, having bought them with whem already fitted, but with the quality of bearings used as standard, my honest advice would be to change back to standard bearing and play with reel tuning to get the best balence for your style of casting good luck!

dependent on casting style, smoothness of cast etc etc, anywhere between 6-4 on the settings, day to day(cold weather changes the oil in the bearings, and wind direction on the beach, conditions etc.but 4-6 should be about right for the balance between distance and no frap ups! if your having probs in the wind just take a click back on the settings until u are confortable, there really is no 'ideal' setting , just what suits each persons style etc good luck!

Best advice I can offer is don't muddle the line between being a caster and a fisherman. When you're standing on sand or shingle, have a lump of unsightly bait on the end of your line as well as a lead, all that tweaking counts for $hit and puts you at much higher risk of getting a birdy/cracking off. You are talking minimal advantages and the amount of beaches on the Island that could benefit from this are crap anyway for decent catches. Just enjoy the fishing and chill out

Didn't you have 2 extra magnets to put in when you bought it? I wouldn't add grease because as damo said, it would take away any advantage gained from changing them over. I would put a few drops of oil thicker than rocket fuel in to the bearings as this will slow down the spool. Spool noise I would agree is most likely due to in-balance. Put some backing line on the spool & try putting a lump in the line each side then level it out cotton reel style. ONCE you have it sorted DON'T remove it, just add new line to the backing. Although you may need to as the spool might corrode
