As Phish recommends or the the Abu suveran has got to be a safe punt going by the quality of their 30 & 50lb classes. You might have to do some haggling to come in on budget?

Where/how will you use it for plaice. The reason for asking is I wouldn't use a light rod at Ventnor on the mussel, too many snags there for a light rod (I use an uptider there). If you are anchoring up in the solent area 12lb would be fine, I'd stick with Abu or Daiwa ranges

That's good timing - I received my new Daiwa Kenzaki 6-12lb in the post today. Obviously haven't had a chance to fish with it yet but I've been trying various leads on it to see how it behaves. It takes up to 6oz fine. I'd say under 4oz would be optimum which would be fine for most serious breaming. I tried an 8oz on it and although it will take it, it's not comfortable, but I don't intend to use the rod when near 8oz is required. I also tried a few smaller pirks/jigs on it and it's perfect for that too - I'm looking forward to trying that this year. The quality is as good as ever with Daiwa rods - brilliant - it's not gaudy at all - mostly black. Has a really slim tip that tapers quickly until the strength kicks in. I'm sure it will have fantastic bite detection. Strangely it's a equal 2-piece but this doesn't seem to affect the action. Nice light rod that packs down really small - I'm thinking they'd be good for flying to Alderney etc. All the fittings are Fuji - really nice eyes on them - look very braid friendly. I'd say they'd only be big enough for multiplier use. A nice touch is the fore grip which is triangular in shape like on the Carbo Whisker boat rods. Very comfortable. I can't wait to attach it to a 4lb bream or plaice! This range has come down in price a lot. RRP was £129.99 but Spotty Dog Tackle (reputable) is knocking them out for £69.99 on eBay - that's 20 quid less than on their own website! It was the cheapest I found. Check them out - Daiwa Kenzaki £69.99I bought mine through eBay on Friday and it arrived today so it's a genuine deal.

Check out the new rods from Imax, I bought a couple of 18 stroke 22's (thats the size of weights mainly used 18-22oz - bit weird i know) mainly for codding - lovely light slim blanks - excellent rods for the money retail at £79.99 but bound to find them cheaper, the lighest one is 10 stroke 14 - but going by the tip diameter and bite detection of mine the 10/14 would be ideal for what you want. I went out on a bit of a limb buying these (i usually buy Daiwa or conoflex) but was well pleased - i dont think daiwa rods are as good as they used to be (even top of the range rods) mainly for the build quality. Having said that we one a Daiwa Kensaki in Ireland last year and it looks like a lovely rod.
cheers

Well if you are on a budget you may have to look at rods made with blanks from PRC but if you can spring for a Conoflex then I'd say do it.
I have a 12lb rod made from a Conoflex blank which is about 8' long and is just Wizzo, I think its a modified uptide rod but its just sooo good for Bream and Plaice.
I have never managed to wear out a Conoflex boat rod, I've have ones which are 30 years old which I am loath to throw away although I have since bought replacements made from more modern materials. I have a 50Lb class which has been re rung at least 4 times, had new handles and winch fittings and its still OK to fish with although I prefer to use more up to date kit.
You will have to go a long way to beat a British rod blank and on boat rods the difference in price between a top dollar British blank and a far eastern one is not as significant as on a beach blank

I have seen two break and they have broken in the same place, right where there is a flat spot towards the end of the tip They were £25 on-line a few months ago, I suppose that could be the reason I broke a 30/50 Piranha a couple of trips ago, right where Nick said, on a flat spot

Just a thought, what's wrong with the good old Ugly Stick range?
