Shufflin through me old Sea Danglers this aft (May 2003) and came across an article on fav Hook knots. Up untill John Wilson changed me ways with a Palomar Knot in about 1976 I wos happy using the tucked half blood for donkies years. I Cant recall the Palomar knot slipping ever in battle....so has been good to me. result read in mag.......... 20lb line used in test. Half blood ...average breaking point....10.1lb Tucked half blood.....average breaking point.....14lb Palomar ....average breaking point.....16.5lb It doesnt mention Braid Hook knots. So while im sitting tying a few more snoods, just wondered what Knot is your fav for Hooks on Beach or Boat rigs. Gazza

Rog B was involved in some testing of hook knots, the one that retained most strength was a uni knot with 2 passes through the eye, 2 turns around the snood, then another 2 (if you know what I mean) I think the 2 passes through the eye takes a lot of strain off the knot

If using worms or thin sandeels and hooks up to about 1/0, something like a 6 turn half blood (depends on snood line diameter). Big sandeels, squid, peeler, mackerel etc and hooks like 3/0 and up I use a four turn grinner. This is much better on snoods of 40lb and up. If using conger tackle (snoods and rig body of 100lb+) I make the knot a 3 turn grinner, still snugs up well Using a grinner when using worms can make them stick up the snood because the tag end points up the line

I know you are right with the palomar Gazza, it really is the best hook knot but having learned the tucked half blood years ago, I can't be bothered. Note to self: Start doing the palomar or one day you may be sorry.
