Hi all, Any one got any really *bad* reviews of gear/tackle? These are often hard to come by, as people are reluctant to admit they've wasted thier money, but they're often more useful than positive reviews. What is worse, people like "Total Sea Fishing" only seem to give good reviews! I'll try and get started - Shock leader. Not found a good one that doesn't unravel off the spool like a slinky spring. Greased Weasel, Drennan, Maxima 60lb,Bright pink stuff from Shakepeare. All rubbish. Looks like I'm going to have to spend more than a few quid per spool. Any suggestions. Also Talon Reel Clamp. I heard great things about this, so I sent off for one for my new rod. After nearly breaking my fingers trying to tighten it up and still getting reel movement, I've resigned to the fact the Talon is going to sit next to the Fondu Set and the Sandwich Maker. Any other bits of kit you're afraid to say you wasted cash on? Come on, 'fess up Steve.

oh yes I could slag alot of tackle off, but I will just give ya a taster.
Never buy a diawa bass rod (the new one) I bought a stx bass 10 years ago n it was one hell of a rod when it broke i thought I would purchase the new model, MISTAKE a load of crap any body who disaggrees ya can av it for £60 used once!! cost £120, next on my list is alan yates(who does he think he is anyway) putting his name on what at a first glance looks like a good hook, how wrong! We have lost some very big fish to these hooks snapping from the beach n boat , the tips are too soft n after a couple of casts you end up with a square non point at the end(if it doesnt snap 1st), Next penn in general, somethings are good but not the lot, ask who has paid the most in advertizing to sea angler n who rates all there products!! One product I will rave about is the patridge hooks the seabeasts are the nuts try breaking one of them yatesy!!
I also have a cheap greys appolo for sale. nuff said!
suffix for your leaders or ultima rig body also i am impressed with the greys shockleader,
This is all only my opinion
I now try before I buy or let someone else buy then i try.....

Cracking post Steve, just whats called for mate! Sea Angler should take this approach (real reviews) the bad manufacturers will cease their advertising but subscriptions would rocket & the mag would gain a bit of respect from anglers that know their stuff. Its a real pity that beginners that are most likely to buy it are getting led up the garden path & consequently wasting their hard earned dough on what may well be a piece of cr*p!

Also I seem to remember this mag being proud of the fact that nobody on there staff would ever endorse a product or manufacturer.........mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm! how times change its all cash cash

I don't have much knowledge of multies either mate, but i think good ones are pretty much foolproof! I have only used the ones that you have to have your thumb on the spool every inch of the cast. A good one, you only `stop` the spool when the weight has landed! (Stop me if i`m insulting your intelligence) ;D

Steve , now on to the talon grips ......... absolutely shite after the first few times of use !!!!!, mine after paying 15 quid , went in the bin !!!!!, as for shockleader check out ultimas tapered leader , a great line !!!!!!!! and alan yates hooks ...........well who use them !!!!!!!, but i will disagree on buying sea angler / tsf magazines !!!!, of course they are all out for incoming revenue , but you must admit they give great reading !!!!, , and also do print bad reviews !!!!, Penn now this company do have some great rods and reels on the market , especially reels , ive heard nothing but good reports on penns 525 range , but sadly sales back up lacks some what information on any product they sell !!!!!, there rod range has a bad reputation of snapping , especially the pit range i.e viper !!!!, or pit viper , but unless we all try what a company has to offer then we will never know for ourselves!!!!!!!,
cheers lee.

I agree on your tapered leader choice but its a bit snaggy in alot of places over here and steve has been losing loads of tackle of late and they are a bit pricey to replace every other set but ultima does seem to be good I use the rig body in 80lb nad no worries ties up lovely unlike some.

I just had a look at it in Argos online - £40 - would it be suitable from the beach for light work/lures/spinning?
