bag of poo reel! this is the worst reel I have ever used total cheap crap put together in outa space by space monkeys on acid.

no not the lever drag, star drag, they have made the gap round the spool perfect to eat braid it slips in a treat, great, they corrode if ya breathe to heavy on em n the drags are next to usless, I suppose the lever drag was a cracker as well then?

Blimey, I thought ABU7000's were the standard bullet proof beach casting reel. Is it the "HSN" bit that makes it such a crock, or are all ABU 7000's rubbish?

Absolutely not Steve ! I've got a 7000 I acuired about 20 years ago, and it was second hand then. Still going strong !

No its the bit where they are put together in odd countries ( some models) that have ruined them, seems to of happened in recent years build quaility on SOME models are total toss, hence cheap ebay bargins on some models, these are the naughty ones! the old black 9000/10000 were super try a new one n its not so super! oh n my friend has a 9000 big game n its a corroding mess on the rod only a year old!!

Steer clear of the majority of gold coloured ABU reels and 'some' of the black ones. Basically the black reels to own are the 2-speed ones. If its 2-speed then its a really well built reel - these are the older reels - a real find.
ABU seem to have labelled all the crap new reels as BG or Big Game - although again, there is a slight complication here as ABU made some reels a while back called 'Big Game' and they were great! These were nothing like new range so best steer clear as I say.
The best 7000 to own was black too! Really old and had heavy brass sideplates - no corrosion. Again, hard to find but great reels.

I have been informed that the smaller 6500 n below still get built in sweden it is just 7000 n above that are assembled abroad which would explain why the smaller ones are ok- ish.

I bought a 7001 left hander, red, of ebay £51-00 inc post, seems a really tight reel can't get 0.1mm feeler guage in spool gap, but its made in Taiwan.

Seems like its their quality control thats at fault. You see a lot of factory reconditioned abus on ebay going for a song, must have a lot of returns!!! IMO the far east cant build anything as well as european companys, I paint for a living and hamilton brushes are crap now they are made abroad.

Just thought I'd bring this old post back because I stumbled across a bit of a find on eBay. Below is a link to an original red ABU 7000 from 1980 and it looks to be in first class nick for a reel of this age.
