Less than a year old cost £200 and now its screwed, gears, drag and ratchet all goofed..... All the tackle shop talk of it will last years.... I used it for congers which is hard on your reels but surely this is what they are made for!!? Local tackle shop reckons it could be non cost affective to repair

Hmm. Rather harsh treatment for a reel of this sort, more a bassing reel in my book.
If you wanta kill em and eat em reel that will cost about the same get a Daiwa Saltiga SA 30 or 40 Luurvely

whoops only recognised that the 975LD is a baitcasting multi... as the above said its a bit harsh for congering... Cant see why its a bit harsh!!! At the end of the day its a reel to catch fish and sold as a reel that can handle fish, cant see how loading it with 20lb braid and using only 4 oz of lead max on it and pulling in the odd conger on it can kill it?? Its not like a have done the drag up with pliers and rip the eels out the water............

a m8 of mine use a tiny penn iner (not sure on model, but its small) for wrecking and seems to have got away with it so far (its got to be 4-5 years old), but i have been lead to believe penns are now doign what abu started doing few years back...........cutting cost on build quality i beleive penn are now under shakespear ownership, i may be wrong, but it could explain a thing or two

Dan... No I am fishing small leads but targeting 40lb-70lb eels ;D but surely a reel with a lever drag is designed to get some stick and cope....

Got to agree with Nick here, I had the 975 Levelwind and the 975CS, nothing but trouble - the main problem was some of the components are not durable enough, a bit plasticky and some others prone to rusting, I found water finds its way in to these reels very easily. I did hear that they had a batch that went through some extreme temperatures during shipping and the lubricants added during assembly was evaporated or removed somehow, perhaps that has something to do with the stories you hear of these reels...
The quality is nothing like the Internationals used for BG fishing, I believe Penn used the name for a series of smaller reels but seriously comprimised the quality.
