Hi baldric , for bass , i would use a pulley pennel rig , size 4 /0 hooks , and best bait depends on the food source in that area , but a whole mackeral fillet , and whole squid has worked well for me !!!! but by far 1 of the best ways to catch them is livebaiting a pout ......., as for lures , dexter wedges , rapala lures work best , but some will swear by jointed plugs !!!!!!!, good luck in your quest ,

I may take you up on that Cuckoo Living in most probably the most central bit of England (Northampton) means I dont get out much to Sea Fish I have mostly fished Eastney end of Southsea, so going a bit further a field is called for , if I am to start getting any decent catches.

Hi Baldric - great advice above ! For my two penneth worth here's some general stuff about bass fishing I wrote in answer to a similar question on another forum once:
One of the biggest factors in bass fishing (or any other) is local knowledge. If you don't have access to this - try gathering your own - it's half the fascination of it.
Walk along your chosen beach at low tide and study it. Look for 'features'. Even on a beach consisting of mainly clean ground spy out any bolders or patches of rocks, weed beds, worm/shelfish beds, maybe groins jutting out into the tide. Make a note of where they are.
All these places represent food and shelter for crabs, worms, prawns, smaller fish etc. which will hopefully attract predators - like bass.
Once you have chosen some spots to try, fish them on a variety of different sizes of tides, and different periods of the flood or ebb. Try during the day or after dark, or around dawn or dusk. Again keep notes ! You can begin to build up a picture of when they are present and feeding - often this will be at quite specific times during certain tides and might only be for short spells.
Be prepared to experiment with different baits - often bass will be pre-occupied with certain things i.e. crabs in spring/early summer with the onset of moulting their old shells, or fish baits like mackeral or squid later in the season.
Fish as light as you can if ledgering - most of the time bass are never far out so heavy beachcasters are rarely necessary and light tackle allows bait to be taken with the least resistance felt by the fish. Also a light rod can held for long periods - often necessary to feel the initial take and strike successfully.
There are many other methods to try as you progress - spinning and plugging, float fishing, live-baiting etc. and then there’s fly fishing - something I've yet to try !
As has been said if it's sizable bass your after, big baits are usually the order of the day - with correspondingly large hooks - 4/0 - 6/0, pennel arrangment a favourite. I usually favour the running ledger.
Good luck !

Northampton , the land of tesco trolley ridden canals lol , what a place to set your roots for a sea angler , i live about 30 -40 minutes from eastney so if your ever down this way pm me , and ill take you to catch as many pout as you want , freeze them for dead bait , that can work equally well , when pout are in short supply !!!!! , seriously if you fancy a fish this neck of the woods , i will be glad to join you !!!!!!

As far as lures go either rapala j 13 s or storm deep thunderstcks, clours vary with conditions , in bright sunlight we use chrome and blue ones ,on darker days fire tigers. These have accounted for over 200 bass in the boat this year.
