We mostly troll , and yes had similar to you , when one person hooks up we try to get the other lures out of the way and we have had them taken when they are right by the side of the boat. Pretty awesome when you see a bass hit a lure that close to you.

"Yeah but how & where do you get the pout ?? I have never caught a pout, so would not know one if it jump out and bit me !"
That's all I can catch mate, come to the Isle Of Wight, more pouting than Naomi Campbell at a fashion show...

For Bass off the rocks I use Rapala X-raps they cast better than J13's but you don't need to cast far, try and keep back so they can't see you in close as they will follow the lure right in. Off a surf beach with the wind in your face I use the old 38gram metal fish, it casts right into a storm, or a single sandeel on a 5 foot trace 1ounce weight and wak it with the tide, just toss it into the third breaker and wait for the fun. In the boat I troll the turbulent water over rocks, ledges, tide breaks etc dead slow with J13's or the deadly Rapala sliver. Never had any luck with the terminators though or those Berkley things sold to me as "these are good". Best of luck mate.

Best of luck mate. dont give up on the terminaters they are deadly I use the small floating one not the big one cause it aint as good had loads n loads on it, one thing the hooks need upgrading! we were having good luck around the cliff areas!? last year on maria angel kisses/terminators made the the rapalas look rubbish!!!!we fish 4 rods 2 shallow divers 2 deeper runners, and troll up n down a 300yard area.

Speaking to the guy in Paiges today who is a confirmed bass addict of 20 yrs and this year he has had 3 bass over 10lb ( 10+,13and 14lb) come through the shop, all from Hayling .After hearing this and wiping the dribble from my chin I enquired as to how a relative novice like myself would go about catching such a fish. Turns out that he hasn't had one over 10lb himself but has had many 9's up to 9lb 14oz . Spoke about my own plans for the coming year as regards trying to have a few out from under the mackerel shoals coming into the harbour close to eaststoke pt and he recommends I catch a mackerel and put it straight back out alive .Makes good sense this and I can see it working-what rig if any ( freelining sounds possible) would you guys recommend for this style of fishing. nb I would need to walk with the shoal as it drifted in with the tide. this method works on the island beaches but i dont follow the shoal i put it out with a 6oz gripper in the trough a bass will find it more easliy by it self than if it was with a 1000 others!! 6ft-8ft free flowing 20lb amnesia body set your drag light so it can kill it, turn it, n take it with not too much resistance,I think bass work the edges of a mac shoal any how other wise if they went through the middle they would dispurse the mac.............. a small treble through the snout is meant to be the way but i would use a 5/0 light strong hook.

Thanks Nick you've filled in the gaps nicely. I suppose the mac will look a lot more vulnerable and stand out a bit if its "restrained" . The guy also said a netsman had a 24lb fish inside Chi Harbour not too long ago and the best boat caught one (rod and line) went 17lb close to shore at the eastern end of Hayling. The doubles he spoke of were spread out along the front. 24lb mad eh!!!!!!!!!! nb How does a bass kill a maccy ? with a bite?

I think it kills it by hitting hard(stunning it) hence have your drag set light or its poss you will only get a massive bite then nothing where as with the drag it seems to scream off slow then it flys off trying to shake the hook i count to 3 when live baiting then strike also i use a soft tipped rod to absorb the initial bite a stiff rod they can feel n will lead to dropped baits, this is only my method that works for me
