I wonder if somebody could help, I want to have a little dangle down by the lifeboat station but when I was last down on a spring tide the current running through seems a tad on the fast side. Is it better to fish it on the neaps and is it better to walk further up the beech towards the sea where the channel is wider?
Thanks
Steve

Hi Steve - can't help you much on this one, but Darenw and maghouse among others will be in the know. I'm sure they'll be along soon.

Hello mrfish, Have fished that channel many times but you are right that you can only do it sensibly at certain times: The outflowing current can get up to 6 knots which is impossible to fish and even the inflowing current can do 4 knots in certain conditions. So what is the answer? - Sean (fishing buddy) and I only do it when there are neap or near neap tides and once the ebb gets going (usually about 1.5 hours after high water), we pack up and go home. In the summer there can be a serious weed problem too; again, it will drive you nuts if you try to fish when there are wacking great weed monsters floating past. We don't, as we have lost line and end tackle in the past trying to do it which is just a waste of time and money. If we get there and there is loads of weed we just naff off to the seafront instead. Having said all that, it can be a good spot for bass and a few weeks ago we got a couple of whiting there too. Might see you sometime as we fish it at least once a month - you can't miss us, I am the old twit with a woolly hat on at present and Sean is 6' 2" and built like a brick sh**house (he is my minder LOL)

Hi Mrfish, like eccles I've fished the channel many times since late September to the present. What eccles said about the tide is spot on, much too fierce to fish out in. What me and my Mrs do is fish an hour before and on untils either the tide or weed makes it unfishable. We do the same at the bottom of the tide too. Pick a small tide and you may get a while longer. As a rule 6-10 foot out has produced best for us with a big squid bait.Fishing this close also cuts down on a lot of weed. This is a very deep mark. Around towards the entrance is a bar, to the right of this 2hrs after low you get a few bass so you can move around there when the tides to strong.

Cheers Guys,
That's a great help, a mate and I are going down next weekend on the spring tides so maybe we'll leave that area for another time. I have been told about an area near a pipe could you tell me where abouts that is and is the pipe visible?
Eccles - We will look out for that bobble hat of yours ;D
Cheers
Steve

Yes that old pipe is visible at low water I think it is a surface water drain for the island but not sure. It is roughly a couple of hundred yards due east of the Funfair site. Did not know there was anything special about it though. I prefer the west side of the funfair anyway - beach car parks are free 'til we get past March. Once it gets past March we a have a few little spots to park for free (but we do live here). Sod paying the council £5 a day to park on our own beaches. Wonder what they would do if you parked below highwater mark. It does not seem to dawn on our dozy local council that if they made the parking charges reasonable they would get a lot more visitors. In France most beach car parks are 1 Euro for the day (about 70p).

Hi Mrfish .... really what else has been said - the Lifeboat is not particulary good due to the water race in and out, seems not much there either - see the post today by Povs ... The seafront will be much better but needs to be fished just after a blow (or during it !) for best results ...

Hi Maghouse, Sounds like I've been given a bit of duff info - thought that only happened in carp fishing Poor povs. It probably makes it worse reading the other catch reports of you guys doing so well, nice one by the way. I'm down again next weekend so may see you about. Cheers Steve
