Something always tells me to pick out a blue/bluey silver colour, or failing that greenish. Don't know why. never had much luck on red.
OK, it depends on conditions etc, but what colours do people favour?

blacks silver work best for me jointed deff up the catch rate two the yozuri crystal minnow Calypso design was a killer mirror silver with pink stripe under neath is a cracker but if water is dirty orange and black works very well also seems to work well in solent for some reason round totland bay weird. Also the clear plugs work best when crystal clear and black at dusk or fishing at night with full moon makes a great silhouette on the surface.

Yep, lot of sense from Squidhead there. In my mind it's all about contrast. I like to to fish lures that replicate real prey fish like sandeel and mackerel as it makes me fish with more confidence but don't get caught in the trap of only ever doing this. If the fish can't see your lure, generally you'll find it hard to catch. If the water is murky don't be afraid to use lures in fluo orange or yellow (chartreuse). You definitely want a black lure of somekind too.
