Hi all. As it looks like the next comp is gonna involve a few fat IOW flounders......i`m thinking of fishing one static bait and spooning for a few with another rod. Any dab hand spooners on here? ;D How far off the bottom do you work the spoon? and how fast is the best retrieve? Any answers to my questions and any other tips will be greatly appreciated. Dave

Hi mate I'm no expert, but had a little success in the spring with spoons, found they work better without any weight, which seems to put the flounder off, and a rag worm on the hook, slow retrieve, think the aim is to drag over the river bed disturbing the mud as it goes, think the flounder are just curious.

I always use my spoons under a big vaned pike float. the best ones i have found have what looks like a dart flight on the top. I think it might acually be a marker float
The wind and tide drag the spoon (which i use as the weight) and i have had a fair bit of success with it.

how are you able to gauge the depth if the water successfully allowing the spoon to sit on the bottom the last thing i want is to have my spoon mid stream floating around as this is as much use as a one legged man in an arse kicking comp.

it doesn't need to be set to the exact depth
. If you set it 2 or 3 feet more than the average depth then it will drag along the bottom.
You obviously need to be aware of snags etc

Thats one downside to spooning,i done it on a boat and we was in shallow ground and my m8s rod hit a snag while we was on the drift,i almost died laughing when the rod bent double in its rod holder, and he was struggling to get it out thinking he had a huge fish on

if you are serious about spooning, you could do worse than pick up a copy of,"FLATFISH AND HOW TO CATCH THEM"written by a guy who goes under the pseudonym of SEANGLER,i used to fish with a guy who knew the author, and the author(john gerrad) invented the flounder spoon and developed it by fishing in fareham creek, the odd copies do come up on ebay and for the few quid you can get get em for are well worth a read,
