For a simple Mackerel Feather: 1) Attach thread to hook. 2) Tie a feather along either side of the hook. You could stop here and have a lure similar to an 'old skool' macky feather, or: 3) Add a few strands of flashy material (Krystal flash in this case). You could stop here and have an effective lure, or: 4) Tie off thread with a whip finish or a few half hitches. 5) Cut a piece of pearl or silver mylar tubing the length of the hook shank. 6) Re-attach thread and secure mylar tubing near the eye.

I should add that you don't need a fancy flytying vice, a set of mole grips clamped to the edge of a table work just as well.

Just wind the thread over itself to start then apply a dab of clear nail varnish. As for building the rig, droppers attached to the main rig body with 3 turn water knots should do the job.

Hey MJB Just excellent tying and splendid photos, who need mags. Fancy fly tying vices are nice though almost as good as reels, I got several but still like me old Regal lever best.

Of course you could dispense with the feathers and flash and just tie the mylar tube to the hook:

a string of those in tandem would look more like a small shoal of fish moving subsurface "to my eye" with the reflection of the Mylar in the light..more than a string of feathers. That said, plain white feathers have been more succesful for me than any other type from a beach. The Mylar ones do look good MJB thanks for taking the time to post the piccies mate................NOW........ wheres that vice. Gazza
