Hi Lozbry
There's a few methods of hooking live eels...
1) Single hook up through the chin off the eel, and out through the nose (not too far back as will damage the eel)
2) Single hook threaded through the mouth & out through the gill without piercing the eel and then nick the hook in the belly
3) Pennel set up (fixed & hooks about 5" apart - depending on size of eels) with top (pennel) hook through nose and bottom hook nicked through back of eel - this is best when using large eels / launce
hope this helps ;D

Hi Lozbry 2) Single hook threaded through the mouth & out through the gill without piercing the eel and then nick the hook in the belly A guy who does live sand eel`ing full time over here for bass uses this method but puts the hook about three quarters of the way down the spine on a 3/0 hook once out of the gill. He has done this for 25 odd years and makes a VERY good living out of it, so his technique cant be too bad! I done a bit of "keep half of what i caught" with him....good fun. In his good spots, you only had to touch the bottom and you were in! Another more controversial method used, is putting the hook through the eels eyes, and then pushing a small piece of elastic band over the barb to keep the hook on the eel. This has obvious worries, but hooking a live fish would do, however used!
