Hi all, Seeing a few few reports of the cod being pre-occupied with sprats. Has anyone tried using them for bait? I know they're oily and make killer pike bait. Maybe worth a try? Baits direct do them.
Steve.

they are good from the boat if you can get them to stay on the hook as they are very soft

I would suggest to try them just off the bottom if you see any shoals on the F/Finder

I tried with sprats the other week, 4/0 pennel hook through the nose and near the back fin, and casted out using a DVICE to stop it coming apart.
Caught nothing - but then they were shop bought sprats, and therefore may not have been fresh enough

When Cod get fixed on spratts they are normally attacking shoals mid water, so unless you can find a shoal to hang your bait in among you dont stand much chance and even then your bait will be among dozens of moving fish which are more likely to be attractive.
Bit like sewing a button on a f$rt.
