The main crabbing starts around the end of march early april on the open beachs, mainly just the big Cockcrabs first. they usually lurk under rocks as oppsed to the hens which are in the weed(under the cocks) I have my own traps and they work really well, you can only really put guttering and the like in the rivers as in the open sea it will last all of 2 seconds before washing away. And if you put them in the riers you stand the chance of someone finding them and raping the rewards of your hard work, this i know only to well. June/july brings the spider crab moult and when these are peeling they are deadly, you can also fill a freezer in a tide.

Wouldn't bother with traps mate, some other nob will inevitably empty them before you. Basically it comes down to three options - 1) be an a$$hole and rob everyone elses or 2) be a honest, decent guy and just put that extra bit of effort in or 3) buy them at rip off prices!!!

I would not bother with traps! If you can only get to shanklin and ryde then forget shanklin go toward players beach at ryde, with a bucket and lots of energy! If april is not a wash out then have a go then but if its been raining hard forget it they hate fresh water and will not peel around the low tide area......... If you turn rocks over in your quest please make sure you replace them as you have found them cause an upside down rock with weed on it goes rotten and the crabs will not return and you'll be shooting yourself and others in the foot! Well said Nik, amazing how many inconsiderate people there are about, only takes 2 seconds to return the rock to its original position.

I think your thinking of woodside mate, easier to drive there, yes there is some rag there, but like most places been dug out by mainlanders. ;D thats not a dig at our mainland members, when you get on beach walk right towards fishborne for crab, anywhere in the shingle for rag.
