They may well have been! Bloody great things. Never had any luck on them but didnt try in the best times or conditions! We used to get a few normal Launce on feathers off the sandy bits off freshwater bay over toward stag rock side a few years back, not foul hooked but on big ish feathers. Got some `eel feathers` now so i hope to get more when the good months come around!

was that off the shore mate.they are a great bait out in the boat for big blondes. Sadly not mate, these were from andys boat but there are a few ways to get them from the beach (sandeels) There is a famous episode of `river cottage` where hue and a bloke get loads by doing a figure of eight in the sand with a blunted knife about 2 inch deep.....they just lept out in front of their eyes! Another way we done as kids was to dig your fork in the water line at the bottom of the ebb and scoop out the sand and chuck it up the beach. We had a few but they bury themselves QUICK so you need another mate to grab them. This is not a sure fire way to get them as we had about 3 in half hours hard work! You could always do what i done and reel in a couple skewered on a grip lead wire

I just used to dig them up under Sandown Pier. I think it's easier under because the light levels are less and they think it's night time.
