How long do you leave each cast before retrieving?
I know it seems a very beginner-like question but I fished next to another angler recently that was literally reeling in every 10 minutes. He didnt seem to do any better or worse than me but with two rods on the go his session was like a work out in the gym. No my idea of fishing at all!

it all depends of bait and tide strenth really, while cod fishing last winter had a 16lb pollack on a flyer with macky head that had been on allday. It swam past the fresh squid. Most bait 20mins but strong tides will wash it out quicker, worm if theres crab about can last 5mins.

As Squidhead says it depends on the circumstances, an average duration for my casts on the beaches I regularly fish is approx 20 - 25 mins. My first cast is always my shortest, I reel in to see how the baits are holding up & if its been got at by the crabs etc. Then base the rest of my casts on that. When floundering & the fishing was slow a long duration seemed to be the key providing the crabs werent about. I would leave casts 40 or 50 minutes & still alot of bites would come just before I reeled in.

i have started bringing mine in every 10 or 15 mins to check the bait. crabs will nab it here otherwise. other problem is if bait is lying concealed on sea bed and you are leaving it 30 mins that is a lot of your trip lost. now when it comes to carp fishing i suggest you cast out on monday morning go to work for the week then see the kids, kiss the wife, have a long weekend in paris followed by a couple of days at home then 10 days later go back to the lake and wind it in again.tight lines

same as every one else 15-25mins depends on conditions and bait if the baits not getting washed out so quick will sometimes leave one rod out twice as long as the other

Thanks lads, as I expected. I prefer sitting back watching the rod tip, if the baits were getting washed out within a few minutes I would certainly only fish the one rod. Thanks again
