I have been using braid the last couple of times that I have been fishing at Hayling and had a nightmare holding bottom with the high winds and rising tides. Being new to sea fishing I'm not sure if it's because of the braid and zero stretch (although I do use a mono shock leader) making it easier for the conditions to pop the breakaway lead out of the deck or, whether this would of happened with mono anyway.
I wonder if anybody could advise?
Cheers

Difficult to tell sometimes, generaly braid makes it better, the thinner line will not have as much drag from the sea & wind so "cuts" through and hold bottom but in these winds - anything would have trouble in holding.
But try these :
After you cast - stop the line (FS or multi ?) after the lead hits the water to stop the line running away in the wind and let the weight hit bottom then a small bow to allow the lead to 'line up and dig in - bit of tension so the tip is slightly arcing and you should be fine.
Keep the rod tip high out of any breakers and rolling weed - that will pull out the lead as well.
Last bit, make sure the lead wires are well secure & if nessecary bend them out a little and maybe even put a girlie pony tail band around the wires to stop them breaking out.
Last last bit - you can get breakaway extreme leads which are good for these conditions ...
Good luck !

All I can add is that mono is generally accepted as the preference over braid for uptiding from boats for the same reason - it's easier for the lead to be pulled out - either by the motion of the boat or when the line picks up weed. (great tips from maghouse by the way)

Thanks for the help guys.
I really like the braid for the bite detection, I will try your suggestions next time I'm out, thanks Maghouse.
