Out of interest what do you guys carry on your craft regarding spares for your engine?
Reason for asking I have just boat a boat with a desiel engine and was wondering what to carry without towing a workshop!

Alternator belt Impeller for Jabsco Fuel Filter Oil filter + oil Jubilee clips Various crimp connectors and cable A few compression fittings and copper tube Selection of nuts, bolts and washers
I used to carry a spare alternator, but decided that with two batteries it wasn't necessary.
As my boat is inboard petrol, I also carry: Set of plugs. Distributor cap Rotor Arm Points Condenser Ignition coil Plug leads.
There are probably other bits that have accumulated over time.
Fairly complete tool kit, mutimeter, dwell meter, gas blow lamp, solder etc.

i get asked this a lot by owners and i always tell owners to carrie:- a belt, pre filter(fuel) and a impeller, plus the tools needed to change them and then i show them a few basics of the normal things that can go wrong,ie - how to bleed fuel ,change prefilter, change impeller ,clean strainer, and levals . after that it will depend on you engine diagnosis skills,as if you know very little you can make a bad day in to a very expencive bad day, id also recomend a sea start memebership, esp if you have a outboard as working on one of them bouncing around is very ifffy and you will always drop things in to the drink.
i dont mean to sound like im saying to suck eggs but ,the most important thing is to look after your engine b4 it breaks down , i know it sounds easy but most people dont . for a start, a proper engine service every year, including a battary drop test runnning the boat up regularly (say every 2 weeks), checking levals and cleaning out the strainer for the raw water in take regularly (should be done b4 every trip). check for leaks and get them fixed ,as a small leak can be cheap to fix but if left it will get more expencive.
