Cost varies between models. Prices start from about £430 for an Ocean Kayak Scupper Pro - most are between £500 - £700, - and go up to £1500 for a fibreglass yak.
You'll need a buoyancy aid, suitable clothing, compass, knife and a paddle to start with (plus some basic rigging) and a means of communication whilst on the water (ideally a handheld VHF but could take a mobile).
You may get a paddle thrown in when you buy the kayak - it may be a bit on the heavy side but should be ok to start with whilst you get used to things - you may not want to upgrade if you're not covering any great distance.
