Need to upgrade chartplotter.....any ideas about the garmin vision technology. I'm not too sure about the 3d options......is it only a representation based on chart data.....I cant see how it can be anything else. was also looking at the standard horizon range which use c-map.
which are the most accurate cartographers........
Or.....the new hummingbird side view sonar loooks pretty impressive from the advertising....quite sexy screen shots....any ideas guys.....

I'm looking too, very tempted by the CP300 which can be mounted in the dash, has charts just like the Admiralty ones and also has a video in feed for an underwater camera. There is some PC software around that allows you to map your own 3D underwater profile which would be more accurate than the Garmin - just needs NMEA feeds from GPS and fishfinder to laptop.

have a look and play with the plotters at the port solent super store, but buy else where as they are more expensive than other places. after owning lowrance, simrad and raymarine plotters i will get standard horizon next for ease of use and their 3 yr waterproof warranty. when the funds allow a cp500 is on my list as a large screen is easier to see when you are a few feet away watching the wrecks appear while drifting. the 3d sonar looks good but the picture was probably taken in fresh water,it may not be as good in salt water

I can vouch for the Standard horizon plotter and the C-map technology, we have a cp180 with a c-map Max cartridge - early days but first impression is that both are brilliant. I personally dont buy into the whole 3d thing, as you say the image is mocked up from Charts and soundings.

Thanks for the info guys......... Having had a bit of a look around it seems that the smaller garmin plotters accept the g2 vision cards and do everything the larger versions do, you can then plug a 15'' lcd screen into the video port........ An lcd screen is £900..........which is a lot cheaper than a huge screened plotter....... The general opinion I've had from people is that the 3d images are computer generated from raw admiralty data but are pretty accurate at time of manufacture....... But, the seabed chages, so could quickly become dated...... more research needed but looks like Garmin have the edge...

Why not get a bit of software and maps on a laptop and add a gps receiver.
Then you have a large chartplotter

Why not get a bit of software and maps on a laptop and add a gps receiver. Then you have a large chartplotter i have a lap top chart plotter here but it is difficult to use bouncing around on a boat, its good for storing waypoints though. the rya software is £45 and it has 15 maps on the cd i managed to get a usb gps aerial for £12
