you fishin up there nite or day? if nite- take sandeels, that will get most of the doggies, pout amybe a ray. and a tip- take hermit for the smoothies, ihad a smoothie on hermit las nite just over 2lb.
if day take up worm cos there mite be some wrasse or bream. still take sandeels and hermit maybe

Hard to recommend a 'best' bait when all you're likely to catch is nuisance fish like doggies, pout, baby smoothounds etc. Just take some squid, because you'll get plagued with crap and therefore won't end up wasting good sandeels etc

I used to fish Ryde pier all the time, night and day, if you fish the end, facing towards seview, take an extra rod, put a large flappy chunk of macky on, and let it drift under the pier, no other tackle, just a hook. Ive had several very nice (4lb +) bass that way, 2 at night, one in blazing hot sunshine, and one lost to the pylons used to catch the odd plaice there too, using worm cast towards seview, but not in a long time Nightime, move round to the light if room, amazing what happens in that pool of light.....
