Mini flares are the best for Kayak/windsurfers (spit) etc.
Chemring Marine (Pains Wessex) have just brought out a new 3 shot mini flare in a small tube perfect (designed for) Kayaks/hill walkers/ us rock fishermen etc - available at end of May at all good chandlers for around £35-£40
PM if you want full details ...
No - I am not a Chemring salesman ! just a bloody good product !

I carry miniflares in my pfd and have a coastal pack (2 parachutes, 2 orange smoke and 2 red flares) in my crate. The miniflares are a bit weedy hence I take parachutes with me, but they're too bulky to keep on me. Day/night flares are a good option to carry on yourself.
If budget is limited, I'd recommend buying a VHF first (and learn how to use it).

The mini flares are designed for personal carry in a pocket/life jacket whereas the coastal packs are for use to grab in your snatch bag or snatch in your grab bag (whichever you like !) but if you do have space on your kayak etc. the coastal pack is worth considering.
