Hi all
Looking to get ready to paint the hull and antifoul. This may be a daft question but which is best to put on first?
I suspect paint the hull then mark off the antifoul line with masking tape.
Those with outdrive legs, is there a special antifoul paint for these?

Hi Dave, you are correct in that the antifoul wants to be the last thing on the boat. I dont know whether you have considered having the bottom copper coated. It is very expensive but last a whole lot longer. I believe it can be good for up to ten years whilst antifoul needs redoing every year and touching up on a regular basis.
In the long run the copper coat works out a lot cheaper but you have to suck for the initial hit.
If I ever get a brand new boat with a clean bottom then I would have it done. It is frightening to think what you pay over the years with regular crane outs and antifouling. It is also a horrible job laid on your back in the rain rubbing down and painting. Must be the worst boat job going!!!

as said all ready paint first then anti-foul, just make sure the paint has hardened off b4 puting any masking tape near it and use the low tack blue tape. the is a spiecal anti-foul for out drives. normal anti-foul will eat the a leg away. we use international MPX antifoul on all ally drives and props, its not great but does the job and wont f**k up your drives
cheers john

Dave
I use International white Trilux on my outdrive and boot topping, and black International Interspeed Ultra on the hull below the waterline. I also use the Trilux for a 50mm border on the transom around the outdrive, to prevent the Interspeed Ultra causing corrosion.

I have to do the same very soon. Is it best to sand off all of the original antifoul or just key-it up abit to allow the new stuff to stick??

depends if the old stuff is loose and flakie , if smooth and in good nick just key up and paint up, if loose and flakie, give it a scrap back and start afresh

Whatever you do don't get flecks of paint or sanding dust in eyes or lungs, it is nasty stuff. You should always use wet and dry sandpaper or foam blocks used wet. A mate was hospitalised with antifoul in the eye and it still looked bad weeks later.
