10 yrs old i was both a scout and in the boys brigade from 1970 onwards, i possessed a sheath knife with a 5 inch blade. but my sole intention was to use it in endevours to do with both pass times.i used it fishing for many things and was proud to wear it in a sheath on my belt.without i might add any concern from the police. I dunno what the law was way back then, but no bugger ever tried to take it from me. Such a pity that it is seen as a form of weapon today, or more worryingly a type of defense..!!!!!!!!! I carry a divers knife in my tackle bag plus a filleting knife i know my reasons for having them. but i doubt the average copper would see my side.

Had my first knife when I was seven and received lesson from Dad as to how to sharpen and use. Didn't listen carefully enough and sliced through a finger within the year, after that, I did learn! That was over 50 years ago and I suspect that we were a bit more sensible in those days. Never mind, if you don't give someone responsibility they will not learn to be responsible so I see nothing wrong with an 8 year old having a clasp knife unless he is a chav or a bit thick. Actually, it doesn't matter how old you are as long as you are sensible and on the other hand, I can think of some who should not have knives until they are at least 30 because they do not have normal brains.

Actually asked a policeman about my 4 inch lock knife a few months ago. "Not really interested sir", came the reply " - a gent of your obvious intelligence and seniority is very unlikely to use it for any illegal purpose, so why should the Force be concerned?" Therein lies the rub - an 8 inch blade in the hands of a butcher is a tool, in the hands of a psychopath, it is a lethal weapon.

i had one at about 8-9 years old, never had any one say to much about it. just my mum worried id cut my hand off or somethink. i would say that a kid must not be alowed to buy it him/her self ( age limit of 21 to buy it) and the perant should be able to judge if the kid is safe with one. but at the end of the day if a nutter wants to kill some one or hert some one, thay will find a weapon of some sort weather it be knife, gun, bat or even bike chain its all goning do you some harm
