One minging one will kill the lot. You'd have probably been better putting them on top of the weed and letting them wriggle through, and the paper holds the moisture in.

Always pays to sort them into whole ones and tails, dry them out a bit by rolling them on a few sheets of newspaper and most importantly keep them in the fridge!
If you do put them in weed, use the dry weed nearest the high tide mark......not wet stuff.

well the worms i dug right next to you were fine Mark ;D
Adam is spot on though when he said to put the worms on the weed to wriggle through.
Deffo keep them in the fridge, if not available the coolest possible place.
As Ben said, dry weed as oppose to wet weed, the wet weed saturates the newspaper and when a worm splits it will just lay in the worm jipper as oppose to the paper soaking it up, this will also kill the rest.
For keeping them 1 week+ keep them in a cat litter tray with a very small amount of water in the fridge, change the water every other day and remove the dead worms, kept them for upto a month like that.
Or you can keep them in vermeculite that the builders centre sells (what scotties use) keeps them dry but they dont last for more than 3-4 days

You can also use an aerator. I don't usually keep rag but if i do ( i must stress i've only done it for a few days). i use an aerator and clean sea water, sort out dead ones then put the whole worm in a tub in the fridge and bingo. Lively bu**ers too. There not very firm though
