Being a long time F/S user,i am trying to understand the benefits of using a multi. I have read endless articles on the subject in order that as and when i buy one,it is the right one for the job. I was speaking today to Phil Hyde a Sea angler of sum note who has recommended the following "new" reel as a possible first choice for me as a starting point in multi,s. However, i must say than opinion also is leading me to trying the Penn 525 supermag,as it seems an extremely popular reel with many. I dont profess to understand the engineering advantages of one over another, and the different braking processes are beyond me at present. www.tackletour.com/reviewabugarciarecord.htmlhave a look.....and gimme ya thoughts. As its an investment i dont wish to make a uninformed error in buying the wrong one..!!!! Thanks Gaz

Gaz, the reel shown in your link is I'm sure, a very fine piece of kit, but I'm a bit puzzled by the big bar with the thumb pad across the top ! Most casters for UK beach casting applications would prefer uncluttered access to the spool, so the thumb can be locked over the spool while casting. A similar sized reel is the very poular Abu 6500 Mag Elite (I use one). They are an excellent reel - very forgiving and easy to use - pretty much straight out the box. I would really recommend them for a newcomer to multiplier casting. Good for use on clean - medium ground. They retail for about 80 - 90 quid. The only drawback with the Mag elite is it lacks a free-spool ratchet or clicker. The Penn 525 has a great reputation also, and would be a good choice if you were to be fishing slightly heavier ground more often.

hi gaz
my missus has just bought the penn mag xtra,i also have a abu rocket and blue elite, the penn is a better all round reel and i find it very easy to use due to the mag control and also the retreive rate is quicker, one other thing,if you can try not to get one with a level wind as they can be a pain in the arse with the leader knot and weed getting caught up on it.if your down this way sometime (fareham) and have not got one by then just give me a shout and you can have a few chucks with mine.

I spoke at some length this morning with Phil, on the merits of the reel and he was happy for me.........a complete novice to use it without repeated birds nests, and yes this was a model with a line guide on the top, apparently he showed it all weekend at the Birmingham Fishing Show to rave reviews.....im none the wiser really just want a relatively easy reel to cast without constant backlash, hence the reason for staying with F/S so long. Thanks for your comments rich, im sure there are lots of abu models that would fill the need, none of which im familiar with. If im honest mate.....from 10 ft they all look the bloomin same..!!! Bazza i may have to catch up with you mate....yours is the first ever offer ive had to try one.....scary thought....ill bring you some spare line as im bound to create a spring nest..!!! All i need is a cast to go with it...!!!!! Next stop Neil Mckellow in kent....dont think he realises what hes let himself in for...!!!!!!!!! Cheers for ya thoughts Gaz

Gaz I am the opposite in that I have always used a multiplier from the early Penn Squidder to the 6500 Mag Elite Green, but now due to my right arm being dodgey I am forced to use a F/S. The reason I liked multis is that they are much smaller than a F/S so much lighter and neater. Casting with a multi is not as difficult as some people would have one believe. So go for it a give multis a chance. ;D

Hi Skatenchips, If I had to recommend a multiplier to start with, it has to be the Daiwa 7HT, ( for clean ground ) not only is it user friendly but at about £70.00 it's in the right price range. I'v been using them for more years than i'd like to remember and they have never let me down. For rough ground I'd go for the Daiwa SL20SH, at about the same price as the 7HT. Tight lines M.I.B

Hi there, very important point if you go with the abu, make sure it says made in sweden on the endplate or you will get Taiwanese crap. The swedish ones are the bees knees though

Another tip when starting with a multi is set it slow use big blocks and rocket fuel liquid grease, this way over runs wont happen and as your confidence builds you can lose a brake and/or thinner oil, red rocket fuel, (which the reel is supplied with). Personally I think the diawa is twice the reel than the penns mags.

cheers for your views lads....its not easy to throw 80 quids at anything, with er indoors ...ie the bank manager wanting it spent on wallpaper....lolol....... Anyway i should have said.....the guy i spoke to, who Abu use to do their demo,s at Birmingham Fishing show was telling me. He cast out.....and yes it does have a level wind on.....and would pass the reel/rod to an angler while the spool was still spinning, but woteva braking system is used slowed it enough that there was no over run .....in his words it was the best bit of kit that abu had turned out in yrs.........especially for the newcomer. He maintains the 60 size model will retail for bout 99 squid.... that said...he says for the money i couldnt go far wrong. I can see this draggin on a tad.....so ill leave it there. but many thanks for your comments/recommendations. Gaz

Dont forget this guy is selling them so of course you cant go wrong Bear in mind the abu is designed to cast lures not 5 oz beach leads, the drags are a little odd and get odder with age, where as other companies have designed and built reels to withstand British sea water conditions not a freshwater lake in sweden....................... If you look at your link go to page 2 and look at plus and minus section it has water can enter the chassis this is a common prob with abu's and smells like corrosion unless you do a complete strip and rinse every trip, dont let me put you off ;D The point richard raised about the top bar being a prob is right as well if you wish to achieve distance with anything other than micro baits and small lead you cannot get a grip for any kind of power input...... Finaly there once superb after sales service now is nothing short of total nadgers, been waiting for 1 end cap and 2 screws for 18months and they do not give a flying.........

Dean,if i said i wanted to cast with 15lb line on the spool somewhere between 150/200 yrds over sand/gravel is the Slosh 20 or 30 the tool to do this. Taking into consideration i am still a Lobber"ave70 yds", once a learn a suitable cast to get me there. If not then,i can buy a suitable reel/rod to achieve it. Ok....so i have an iffy back to consider,so just wanted to get the right bit of kit from the get go..!!! Incidently i wont be using it over much rough ground. Cheers mate Gaz
