:Dp :lease help me out here a bit? i know my basics of a couple of fish eat which baits, but i got alot to learn, any help for me on this one would be great. can you tell me which fish go for which baits please? clare ;D  |

Most fish will take pretty much anything but they all generally have their preferences, which can vary depending on the time of year and/or your location.
It would be very difficult to tell you everything, probably easier to tell you what fish you won't catch on certain baits.
What sort of fish were you thinking of?

Thats a huge question.
There are so many different options.
I would generally use rag, crab in the summer monthas and lug, squid during the winter.
But to help you out and point you in the right direction here's some common ones.
Smoothounds - crab
Bream - small squid strips
Bass- rag, lug,peleler crab, mackerel headnguts sort out the large ones.
Plaice, flounder - rag
Cod - lug, squid
Rays - generally fish baits mackerel, sandeel
In the summer mackerel will catch lots of fish and is also alot tougher and stay on the hook better but isn't always a fishes first choice. Adapt your bait size and hooks to meet the fish your trying to catch.
I hope this helps, theres so many different combinations.
You might be better saying what you want to catch, then we can advise on baits and hook sizes.

i have 4 different types of bait for tomorow(we taking our nipper who 6 tomorow for his first fishing trip)
squid/hermit/rag/and peeler.
some for just the adults lol...
dont want him out doing us lol

three hook flapper, size 1 hooks baited with rag is a pretty standard take anything that comes by type of rig.
1/0 wide gape, peeler on a pulley rig for smuts/ bass.

ifu take two rods then a bulk standard 3 hook flapper will catch u most fish with size 2 for the top 2 hooks and 1/0 for the bottom and on the other a simple slider rig with a long trace and a size hook chosen for bait using 2/0-3/0 are the once i use most on that rig hope this is of some use  |

Generally if you fish for flatfish use worm type baits, or if after something bigger then fish fishbaits.
My own preference for hook size is 3.0 for flats or 6.0 for anything else and I only use a running ledger or a variation of a running ledger. Keeps it simple and easy to fish with and a running ledger will catch!

cod...blow lug/black lug-gutted or un-gutted by far the best worm is yellow tail lug if you can get it,use the same as blacks and freeze's well...crab both peeler and hermit..squid/cuttle fish(mud crabs)ragworm,mussels,razor clams.
shell fish best used during or just after a storm,crab/razor/squid good for tipping off or used whole.
plaice&flounder...lug/rag/tipped with mussel or squid for plaice tipped with crab as well for flounder or best method is a device with wish bone rig and a bunch of head hooked rag worm,both fish feed mostly by sight hence all the bling thing on the rigs,best way other than a device is to 'twitch' yer worm bait every 5mins or so,both normally daytime feeders but can be taken at night,browndown is one such venue where plaice feed at night and lug is the better bait,it has more scent.
bass...livebait pout/poor cod/pollack/joey mack....fresh mackerel and garfish is the better dead option,squid/crab/spider crab/rag/lug don't discount bread in the marina's along with bacon sweetcorn etc,bass are just as good at Scavenging as they are at hunting.lures
hounds...crab all sorts/rag/squid
rays fish baits/squid
sting ray..king rag/crab
dogfish...anything
sole ..rag/lug can be tipped with squid/mack depends on the mark/venue,bait needs to be hard on the bottom short snoods
bream rag/squid
wrasse...rag/crab
mullet bread but will take fresh mack and worm baits on the beach close in
pollack worm baits/fish/squid/lures
those are the main fish your likely to encounter around the solent venues give or take giltheads/red mullet and a few other odds and ends,how you present/use the bait and the conditions are as important as the bait itself ;D
hook size will depend on fish and type of bait
flatties nothing bigger than a 1/0(need to a good size flat for that)but mostly size 2 or size 1
cod...2/0-upto-6/0 depending on bait
hound 3/0 to 5/0
bream small hooks rule here size 4 or 6 sometimes carp hooks will get you more fish size 6 to 10
bass is much the same as cod depends on the bait
rays 1/0 upto 4/0
one of the biggest mistakes people make is using the wrong size hook.flatties for example don't have bucket mouths like cod or bass and i seldom use 1/0 hooks unless the pout are annoying me,i prefer to use a size 2 or 1,i know someone suggested 3/0 but that would not get you flounder or plaice unless they were dustbin lid size imo.
