Hiya clare , probally the easiest way to tell is by checking its back shell , if its lifting then your in business , also while your searching if you find a big crab with a smaller crab attached underneath it , then you can be guaranteed the smaller crab will be a softy or a peeler , both are good baits , but the peeler will give a better scent as a bait ! ....... hope this helps .

Hi clare, another sure fire bet is to break a small piece of one of the legs, if the leg meat is dark and reasonably solid, its a peeler, if the leg meat is white colour and watery then its not.

Hi Clare your in the same boat as me as in weve got a few miles to go to collect them, right this is what ive done for the past 25years bearing mind i worked in a fishing tackle shop. i use two buckets Leave one in your car for later, take your partner with you to lift the biggest rocks both of you use some cheapy gardening gloves two reasons one the rocks will cut you fingers to bits and seconed if a bigger crab gets you then you can just wip it off and it wont hurt you. What you do is grab as many crabs as you can in your bucket pick up all of them and keep an eye on the tide as its easy to forget that its comming in,one of the tols that i use is a hand garden rake as the ones that are peeling will be just under the mud or if you get two crabs stuck together the smaller one will be a peeler or a soft-back. when youve done with collecting go get your 2nd bucket then start sorting them out, pick your crab up by its back so the legs are dangling down place it in the palm of your other hand and hold it tightish then bend its last leg and if it comes away easy leaving a new leg then theres your peeler dont worry if it doesnt as it will grow back after a few weeks, put all your keepers in the other bucket with some damp seaweed in also some of the smaller ones (size of a 10p) are good for wrass and smoothhounds. So far this year ive collected 80 from one spot and i will message you of where and when. Regards Tony

Hi C I usually pull the end segment of the smallest leg. If the shell comes away and leaves the flesh behind it is a peeler. I get mine quite local to you and will pm you some details ;D

Hiya clare , another sure fire way to tell if a crab is peeling , when looking under rocks , if you find 4 or 5 crabs all sitting around a bottle of factor 40 , you can guarantee they wont be peeling ;D
