Got to agree about Victorinox, there has to be something special about the metal they use. I have one of their ex German army penknives and it holds it's edge for ages. As it happens I am looking around for a new knife at present having lost my ancient stainless/brass lock knife on the beach a while back. I like to have a lock knife cos they are safer (don't fold up and slice yer fingers if you hold them the wrong way round in the dark) and I prefer at least a 3.75 inch blade so if anyone know of a good 'un, which is not too dear.......

I asked a butcher mate of mine to get me a boning knife. When it arrived it was a Victorinox knife that cost a tenner. Its brilliant, a thick, stiff blade that re-sharpens easily. I would never go back to a thin flimsy filleting knife from the tackle shop again. I'm half the time of everyone else gutting & filleting my catch........& thats not because I have half as many fish as everyone else!

Eddy,if you are looking for a quality folder then you won't go far wrong with a Cold Steel Voyager. They do one with a three inch something blade, I have had one of these for years and it has never let me down.I would imagine that they will be passed down to my grandchildren as they are very long lasting..lol. The steel is a type of high carbon stainless AUS8 I believe and can be sharpened to superb!! I own a few cold steel knifes and can highly reccomend them. They do come up on Ebay at times so you may be lucky to find one at your price or of course treat yourself?? Look for a link on this page (itspectpro)...... www.ltspecpro.com/ind.html..... and scroll down till voyager series (folding knifes) series and there's a couple of vids on the folders. hope this helps lighty

Well thanks for that lighty but on someone else's recommendation, I have decided to go for an Opinel with a 4 inch blade. Apparently their stainless steel models are now made with a high carbon stainless steel supplied by the Swedish Sandvik company and that sounds pretty good to me. Only £12 too. I am well aware that it is illegal to carry such a blade in public but a copper I know says that the Act specifies that if you have good reason for carrying it - you are a woodsman, fisherman, on a hunting trip, etc., then you are exempted. Don't think I will carrying it to the pub though.
