I note with interest that Pure Fishing has become a giant since Shakespeare K2 and Penn Have teamed up with ABU, Berkley, Mitchell, Fenwick, Spider and Stern. Is the monopolies commision going to show an interest in this one, it would only need Daiwa and Shimano to join up with them and you could say good-bye to the discounts that are often offered when tackle companies are in competition with each other. Pure Fishing would dominate the angling market completely. Fuji are the leaders in the rod-building components industry. Their rod guides , in my opinion, are some of the best on the UK market, but they come at a high price. For example a set of Fuji braid guides for an ABU Suveran boat rod requires 10 guides and a tip ring. To buy a replacement set of these guides for this rod will cost approx £110 from Hopkins and Holloway, the UK suppliers. Considering the rod costs £124.99, it appears from this that the rod itself only costs £14.99, which we all know is ridiculous! It shows that one major company governing the angling market is going to cost us.

Good observations Jack ... not sure what we can do to stop the monopoly... in Europe.
Do you know if the US and world market is being cornered in the same way ?

Hi Sunny, Thanks for that, their guides are certainly a lot cheaper than ours. As for any-one trying to corner the US market, i don't think it would be possible, because they have so many rod and reel manufacturers that make very high quality tackle, it would take too much for pure fishing to buy them all up. Where as in the UK there's probably only about 20 blank manufacturers, and that's including split cane rods. As for reels, i don't think we actually manufacture any mulipliers or fixed spools, we're handy as a dumping ground though, because we don't make anything here to challenge mid priced tackle imports.
