plugging seems to work best were fish can come out of the cover of rocks and piles ect. and ambush the plug, before it has time to have a good look to see if its got competition, as it would in the open

Might be more suited to the mooring areas like those in reach from the slipway area at the side of Moody's boatyard.
I have tried a few times near the spot i bottom fish the Hamble but because the weedbed floats on the surface from the edge out for maybe 13 to 18 feet its nearly impossible to lure there the way i want, ie i can bring a lure towards the weed but in the area that would be the strike zone i need to lift the lure too quickly to avoid snagging the weed and losing the lure. I did try to cast up or downriver from me and work the weed edge but didnt get very far because i only ever use an 8 foot spinning rod to fish that spot (even bottom fishing) and within a couple of turns i am stuck on the weed again. Thought about using a beechcaster but even that would leave me stretching and unable to effectively work a lure which is a shame because all the 3lb+ bass i have seen from this spot all come from virtually under the edge of the weedbed so working a lure along the edge would probably bring some good results.

Yep - had one trip to the hamble to plug and resuklted in 1 Bass = 2lb. Bass hang around at the outflows ready to pounce on anything being washed out

Yah, i've tried by the out falls. I spoke to a guy down there and he recons he's had bass on both the fly and plug. I'll keep pluging away (no pun intended), i'm sure it will pay off eventualy.

One place I'm going to try next year is the Warsash side mouth of the Hamble. There's a little 'lagoon' that fills up at HT and it looks like it *could* harbour bass when it does so.

Yah, i know where your talking about, it allways looks fishy to me (if you know what i mean).
I spoke to guy that was also plugging one evening back in the summer. He showed me some pictures on his phone of the bass he'd caught on the plug and fly from the river. So i am asumming it should work, that is unless he was blowin smoke.
I'm going to persever with it, If i don't catch anything thats fishing. If you fancy meeting up in the summer next year let me know, i'm allways up for fishing.

Sounds like a good idea, I should be sorted soon with some new gear and intend to do a lot more spinning and plugging next year. In addition to that mark, I'm going to be looking at a few other locations next year. Mark
