Hi all, Can any 1 give me information on chartplotters and what there mainly used for and what the difference is between gps and chartplotters, Sorry if i sound abit clueless but this is all new to me, Many thanks Dale Perfectly good question Dale. In its very simplest terms- A GPS will plot your crafts position by co-ordinates and will guide you to entered/selected co-ordinates, usually with a compass or highway display pointing you to your chosen mark. A chart plotter will do this but with your co-ord's overlaid on a chart. A plotter is much more visual, if you notice a mark / feature on the on-screen chart that you fancy fishing, you simply point the cursor at it and head to it. To do this with a GPS unit you would have to have the co-ordinates of the mark or feature already, which means getting the charts out. Also your craft is shown on the chart, so if there's a shallow sand bar between you & your chosen mark you will know to steer around it. There's so little difference money-wise with the entry-level plotters that I would go for a chart-plotter over a standard GPS unit. We've got this one which is really good value for money. www.standardhorizon.com/indexVS.cfm?cmd=DisplayProducts&ProdCatID=84&encProdID=8C4F9C5570985FD3B3179295AC4D3ECD&DivisionID=3&isArchived=0You can also buy the CP180i which is the same unit but with an internal antenna which saves you fixing a seperate antenna providing the unit is being mounted in a fairly open position. Good Luck.
