Hi all, I have just got a new gps and bear with me because i aint really got a clue, right let me try and explain this I need help with what settin to have the coordinate system, It give me the options to use LAT/LON in (DEGMIN), LAT/LON in (DEGMINSEC) and UTM. Now the marks i have been tryin to type in are showin the co-odinates in this format 50 46.341N 001 08.944W. In all the options my manual give me it doesnt have this number layout it has 34 06.57N 117 49.57W for the DEGMIN. 34 06 34N 117 49 34W For DEGMINSEC 3774603N 11 423806 for UTM Can any enlighten me with what im doin wronge Many thanks Dale

If so, it's most probably in another format, UTM - Universal Transvere Mercator - uses meter's rather than degree's, minutes & decimal minutes. Maybe your GPS is translating lat/long into UTM? Am I understanding your question right?

hi there, thanks for the quick response its not trying to translate it into something else it just doesn't seem to have the right spaces to type in the co-ordinates, For instance if i get a mark off the computer site it give me this number 50 46.604N 001 10.505W but the space it gets me 2 type it in2 the gps is this -- -- --N --- -- --W so i only have room for 6 numbers in the north co-ordinate and 7 for the west but the number it gives me is 7 numbers north and 8 west on the comp co-ordinate, haha sorry i prob sound like a right idiot trying to explain this and once again would like to remind u all i am VERY new to GPS Thanks for your patients

Do you have the GPS on degrees, minutes & decimals? Can you delete the 'N' & replace with the final digit of the north co-ordinate & delete the 'W' to make room for the final West co-ord? Also - just out of interest, what happens when you enter the co-ordinates without the final digit? does the system still locate somewhere?

Dale, i think these generally have a built in antenna, if it does and your trying to pick up satelites indoors it wont pick them up. So make sure while your trying to get used to it that you have it in sight of the sky.
If your doing that sorry, but just incase your trying to set it up indoors.

Dale, you gotta get outside for a good satellite reception. They don't work like a mobile phone. But you should be able to enter all your co ordinates indoors. It's just the unit won't work for navigation purposes. If your still having trouble bring it into work Monday.
But i would say that if you enter deg/min/sec that will contain more figures then deg/min.
I think you'll find a mixture of co ordinates that i gave you, some have figures for minutes whist some do not.

Dale,
Using your figures
50 46.341N 001 08.944W = deg/min/sec 34 06.57N 117 49.57W = deg/min
I would say having the seconds makes it a more accurate position. Or i might be wrong.
does that help?
Andy

yea ive been out doors looking very silly with it pointing to the sky's probably with the nabours wondering what an earth I'm up to, Also went for a drive with it last nite to see if i could trigger something like when I'm using the girl friends tom tom but no luck. Yea i understand that the different layouts off deg/min/sec gives you that extra bit off accuracy but the co-ordinates i put on my posts were only examples in my hand book where as the mark i have been trying to type in off the internet doesn't have the same number layout. Ill bring it over Monday Andy and we can see if we make sense off it Thanks again all for all your idea's ill let you no how i get on Dale

Hi,
This may help you a little. If your GPS is new it may take it a while to get a fix, i.e 3 sats or more (the more sats the better), this is due to the fact that the GPS has know idea where it is in the world when its first turned on. I won't bore you with all the technical stuff (I'm a Hydrographic surveyor so supposed to know this stuff), but you should be able to enter an approx position into your GPS which should help it find where it is faster, once it has it's location it should aquire a fix quite quickly each time you turn it back on.
Regards position's deg min sec's is no more accurate than deg min decimal min the following positions are all the same position just writen differently all in WGS84
51 33'58.326"N 2 27'49.387"E in deg min sec is the same as 51 33.97209'N 2 27.82311'E in deg min dec min. As you say your GPS doesn't allow that many decimal places when entering the positions but you can simply round up or down eg 51 33.97209' can be entered as 51 33.9721'
Hope this has made some sense
