Hi everyone.
I was just wondering how many of you take a lot of effort and put a lot of thought into, (depending on fish being targeted)
1: what bait are you going to fish with? 2:how much effort you put into presenting it to your fish?
I do a lot of prep work before I go fishing and I always try to present the bait in what I think is the best and most enticing way possible.
After all I think that thoughtful fishing along with good bait presentation can certainly up your catch rate :catch:

Think you've kinda answered your own question. As long as the point of the hook is showing you've said the rest really. Well presented & enticing. As far as i can see the right bait for the target species helps, even then you'll occasionally pick up an unexpected species on a bait its not supposed to take. Iv had Plaice & Smoothound on unbaited feathers, Tope on ragworm & Mackerel on bits of Twix wrapper. Although the last one was a bet with a fishing buddie, not sure he really thought about the wager considering most Mackerel lures are shiny plastic 'sweet wrapper' material anyhow!

With regard to presentation, the critical aspect when sea fishing is ensuring the hooks are sharp and the points are not masked.
The marine environment is much more harsh than some fish pond or stream, so sea fish are much more accustomed to finding food that is smashed up, dead, rotting etc.

I find presentation is key for certain species in certain situations. Especially match fishing. Sometimes a hook 1 size smaller will result in less missed bites and twice as many fish, and when every fish counts that is critical. I will not even consider casting out a bait if im not 100% happy with how it is presented and the rig is spot on. Guess im just fussy but its made a massive difference to my competition fishing over the years and given me a massive edge over alot of other top island anglers.

BAIT PRESENTATION A number of years ago SEA ANGLER ran an article on a chap from north wales, his name was ARTHUR BURLSLEM(any bass fanatics shud have heard of him). He fished around north wales using large edible crab baits :win: in shallow water that was often clear ,as it was rocky ground covered in weed with plenty of gullies it attracted some decent sized fish, not many that he caught were under 4lb, so the bass he caught wernt small greedy buggers but older highly intelligent fish that would in no way be fooled by a scabby lookin dog eared smashed up bit of crab, especially in the clear water fishin in daylight, surely they wudnt be caught on run of the mill beach gear with a 30lb main line and 50lb trace ;D Anyway he got to know his marks like the back of his hand, knowin were to fish and wen.he became very succsesful takin many fish to double figures He then began to experiment on certain marks and actually waded out and placed a juicy edible in a gully that he knew the bass would be runnin, this bait was very lightly hooked and would look like nature intended, after a long wait he retrieved rebaited and placed his bait bak in the same spot, but this time securing the crab with elastic and munchin it up,within 10 mins he had hooked and landed a decent bass....... the experiment was repeated several times and he never hada take on the perfectly presented crab ;D JOB DONE so if bass on crab r ur target tie em on mush em up and bingo and dont worry about a bit of 50lb line hangin out the bait aswell cos the bass wont ;D and usin fine line no matter how much it costs wont help in these venues neither, first rock it touches end of story. The article was called KING ARTHUR OF THE CRABS u may be able to track it down.

I think the main point is makeing sure the hook point is exposed,no matter wot u fish for. As richie has said wen every nibble counts in matches etc things become more crucial with presentation, and also when fishing at xtreme range baiting up needs to be spot on just to ensure the bait reaches the sea and doesnt get blown to bits mid cast, and usin multi hook rigs with clips etc the baitin up needs to be more tidy The man that uses a 3 hook flapper and uses a whole squid on 1 hook half a mackrel on the next and finishes off with a big bunch of worms, then puts it 180 yards hasnt been born yet ,but weve all heard of the man that can, u know him takes a 10 step run up then launches it.............. 50 foot
