Tried out this afternoon with 3/4/5/6oz leads down the lake plus Dvice in 5oz size. Seems easy to use albeit breeezy conditions didnt help me cast that far but managed a few casts around 110yds with 5oz lead. Seems to thrive on slightly heavier load and compresses well. 14lb Stren Gold on 7HT and Penn 525 supermag/60lb shock. over the shoulder lob and Hatteras cast......would like to see a proper caster give it welly.!!!!!!! anyway.......I enjoyed using it and cant wait to get the bugger fishing.... Was tempted to get 1, tip looks good not as soft as some and decent Alconite rings, but the only thing that put me off was the push in spigot, the 1 i had a look at seemed to go in far too much with hardly any room for wear. Most of my rods have 3/4--1 inch gap, whereas this had 3/8 inch if that.

not exactly the rods best selling point,if your being picky and looking for faults. I very much like the casting action of the blank, and yes the modern lightweight guides are great. as for the spigg..!!!!!!!! Ill review the joint after continuous use and make a judgement. Gazza

i don't own this rod, but wish i did! used one for a few casts, anf have fished with a pal who owns it on a few occasions, bite detection is very good, and to cast... wow!
we fished in a force 7-8 southerly (in yer face) at hythe when a dover breakwater trips was cancelled due to the wind. like a twonk i'd loaded up with .40 mono with the thoughts of big fish on the wall, trying to cast that in heavy wind was a nightmare, so i struggled to put stuff at 100 yrds on my fast mag elites and 6oz leads.
at the end of the session i had a few chucks on the afaw match, plain 5oz lead, abu rocket loaded with 15lb / 0.18mm (scary) crytalite carp line. the first two cass into the wind, honestly saw the lead go outta sight! only the third chuck i saw hit the water, and honestly think i'd sruggle to put a plain lead that far on my usual .28mono set-up with no wind!
maybe it's just me.. but that rod was built for me!!

I don't understand how the guide quality can be compromised to keep the cost down. The Big Beach has Fujis on.

For a rod in its price class, the alconite guides are tuff and light and IMHO add quality to the blank instead of using tried and tested "but old" style fujis. Yes,Id love it to have a flush fitting spig rather than a put in. I fished with it all day sat into a breeze and it happily cast 5oz and 2 baits a good distance. The match tip danced all evenin from the poxy pout, that said I want to test it against summit that fights back a bit. Gazza

Have heared that there is some new rods on the way from Jules Beefed up Match rod & poss a rod or 2 for the Tourny guys. All the current rods have have either BMNAG(Alconites) or BVSLG fuji rings, much better than the old tired looking BHNG that some companies persist in using.

What about the Six and Bait? From what I've seen they look like bargain basement guides.

Forgot about the six n bait, yes they do look cheap rings, meant the decent rods they do.

Gazza, How you getting on with the rod?. Had a go with 1 the other day & a Primo match, preferred the AFAW, tip seemed better not as soft.

since my original post 8 months ago, i have picked up a 13'4 afaw match, love it. i'm not a big caster but regularly hit 160m on grass with it.
i'm looking forward to trying out the afaw tournament match and tournament rock, both capable of 250+yrds, but apparently both still retaining excellent bite detection etc.

I can't comment on this rod but i have a AFAW big beach - superb rod. I always had Zziplex's before (primo and TZ500) But so far this rod has out shone both for fishing.
I have it matched with an original 7HT and not bothered what weather i take it out in either.

couldnt agree more, love the rod has brilliant bite detection and seems to cast well with my 525 supermag.....if anything .... for me its possibly TOO borderline stiff as I do have to lean into it to promote a good compression....as with an iffy back ...maybe a slightly softer blank might be better....but I still really like the rod though. If your looking for a softer tip in a match rod then you cant do no wrong looking at the Cono source ......with my bad back i find them a dream to cast with ....they hold up in any tide/ weather......and have so much power in the mid section it compensates the soft tip............Bite detection is awsome...in fact they are so good i got a pair of them .........lol
