Well my pair of Shimano Baitrunner 4000 D fisxed spools arrived today I've bought them for Smooth Hound fishing in the summer... The reel is essentially a ruggedised freshwater baitrunner which can handle the harsher sea environment... with higher quality components and much sturdier fighting handle. I understand they were trialed on the American market first and passed with flying colours. The sizes come from the baby of the family - the 4000D - and go up to the largest - 12000D; which is aimed at the game reel level. I have also bought two of the 12000D Baitrunners to use as offshore uptide reels. The advantage being that you can set the baitrunner drag seperately to the fighting drag....so your rods don't get pulled overboard and by a small turn of the handle the runner drag is disengaged and the fighting drag is preset to the required breaking strain line.....brilliant. Here are the two sizes side-by-side.....the 12000Ds are loaded with 30Lb Berkeley Whiplash Pro braid When I have given them a couple of sessions I will give an update on how they do. I'm certainly impressed with the build quality and the fucntion of the baitrunner clutch

They`re some expensive looking coffee grinders mate! Dont forget that you will still need to lock your drag when casting, especially with braid or you will end up with a hell of a sore finger!

They`re some expensive looking coffee grinders mate! Dont forget that you will still need to lock your drag when casting, especially with braid or you will end up with a hell of a sore finger! That's true Rob. I was using a saltwater Daiwa fixed spool for uptiding earlier in the year and found the braid could be a little hard on your finger.... but the advantages of braid strength over line diameter has been a good compromise. Setting the fighting drag for casting is the same as breaking strength of the braid...so once the Baitrunner fightuing drag is set it doesn't need much attention. The older fixed spool required constant attention to the drag especially when leaving the rod in the rod-rest. How's it going at sea mate ?

If the build quality is as good as my old Biomaster then you should be well chuffed, mines used regularly and going on 25?yrs now, still performing grand, just the odd oil-up now and again. Always best to buy quality gear as it lasts and the best of Shimano is quality.
Hope you enjoy them

If you want to be a real tart then check out the Van Staal range. You're gonna need very deep pockets tho!!
