Guys this survey will be used to determine the future of our hobby; so take the time to complete it. Apparently only 177 anglers have completed it and 522 divers !!!! Guess who will get their way with the future policies on management of our seas ! www.marinevalues.org/anglers

I agree, but we can't let divers - who are a minority group - determine how we use and access the marine environment...which is what will happen. Well done for taking the time Bully

Completed the survey, was I alone in trying to figure out the hidden questions of real relevance? Why was the Solent not mentioned, even as a proposed MCZ

Started to fill out but stopped when questioned about income - this has nothing to do with Marine conservation, what do they really want to know? Read some more and wondered what information they are trying to find from the questions asked in this survey, the donation/how much would we pay seems to lean toward some kind of licence.

Rich Rich I think they are trying to guage how much disposable income we have and are prepared to spend on our hobby; although I admit the questions are also about would we pay to fish. Just answer nil for money, that will end that one ;D I would also like to have seen an option which said leave everything as it is today, except ban all gillnetting within 20 miles of the UK coastline and make it a mandatory 5 year sentence if caught setting a gillnet within that distance. Licence gillnet possession and make it a 5 year mandatory sentence if caught with a net and no permit. Only commercials fitted with a government tracker allowed to carry nets (as they have to here) and a 5 year sentence for not having a fucntional GPS tracker; no excuses. The tracker is fualty then the commercial stays in port...if it fails at sea they immediatetly contact the authorities and make their way to the nearest port...and devaition and they go to jail.... Then move on to the draggers.... and lay out their offences All marine conservation offences also carry madatory seizure and destruction of the vessel....no appeals allowed and no delay on the destruction order..... Ban the capture of certain species and thus anyone found targetting them or holding them... gets to wear stripey pajamas and watch their boat get crushed Simples

Started completing it but did not finish. Did not like the way the questions were phrased and the emphasis on income and willingness to pay.
This is either someones University project or the University being used by some government body to guage the reaction to licensing.
The thing stinks and is one of many such 'surveys' to have been circulated in the past six months.
In response to the above question about the Solent and its status as a Marine Conservation Zone: out of all the Zones being suggested only nine are going to be explored further for adoption, this year, in the South of England. None of those Zones is in the Hampshire area. They have all been shelved for now.

I've completed the survey - at the 4th attempt because it kept crashing in the browser I started with.
I see the survey is being run by a research student at Aberdeen Uni. Students are often used in this kind of project. The money questions are no problem really: they are there because part of the project's purpose is to assess economic value of a healthy environment - and to equate the two is most certainly in anglers' interests. The survey is also interested in what we are prepared to contribute - and we all should be prepared to put something in.
I found the questions which ask you to choose between different environments in which to go fishing the hardest - not really enough information.
But go ahead and do the survey. Without data there won't be much of a project, and ultimately it is in our interests. Shore fishing is pretty bad these days.

sorry 2 b a sceptic i cant see how this survey has any importance to anyone apart from a bunch of students ( in a country who want independence ) who want us to get them a phd. and we pay their uni fees as well ! i worked thro the survey & then killed it without ownership by DEFRA this i believe is meaningless plus the questions are hypothetic to the point of idiocy .or maybe im the idiot & someone will put me right ; in which case ill complete it . had a good day off newhaven sunday last 12lb cod good doggies & a huge whiting nearly 3 lb. ( own boat) happy new year dave

It's research by a decent university dept and therefore it has value. Most research in this country is done by universities or govt agencies; govt will take notice if enough data is gathered to make it worthwhile, which means us completing it, even if the design might be better.
That (some of) Scotland wants independence is irrelevant. If you think you pay the student fees - you don't - even more reason to do the questionnaire - value for money. Let's not dismiss the project out of hand - like I imagine many are doing on a certain other site of self-immolators.
Congrats on the cod. Now fill in the form.
