And its the same mission ive had every winter since i can remember, to catch a Cod.
Now to many on here to catch a Cod is a good day out but for me who has never caught one would make my fishing life to date.
I have tried more times than i can remember and been next to someone catching them and still to no avail. I make the same promise to myself every year and that is to catch a Cod but it just doesnt happen.
Please everyone throw all the advice you can at me because this has gone on for far to long.
To catch a cod whether it be 5lb or 40lb it would make my fishing life and i couldnt rule out the chance of a tear.
So if somebody has any tips or would even help me to catch the fish of my dreams please get in touch.
My friend is also in the same boat as me (excuse the pun) and hes a couple years older than me and been fishing a couple years longer than me.
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm in the same boat mate, 20+ years shore fishing, plus half a dozen or so boat trips, nada. This doesn't exactly qualify me as an expert on this but you do get the occasional codling from Seaview and sandown bay so it'd be worth putting a few hours in on these locations as well as Cowes/Egypt point, fort vic as well as Atherfield and Chale
Good luck!!!

If it’s any consolation I went for over ten years trying to catch a Cod Now I’m sick of the sight of them…………… well not quite they are good to eat and fun to catch.
My first came care of Glen Carnes Valkyrie out of Langston Give him a try
For me and a good few others, small rather than large baits work best, let the dummies with the big bait syndrome put down the scent trail.
Try trotting back from the boat but make sure your tight on the bottom. Keep the rig simple a running ledger NO BOOM or even baited feathers (Cornish tinsel are good right Tom.) Squid Mackerel or worms are good my preference is a small or medium Mackerel flapper but that’s for here in the South West a single squid works well around the island and try stuffing the squid with something soaked in pilchard oil.
Good Luck

I've yet to catch a cod myself. Trouble is they have all but vanished from the shore (on the south coast anyway), though you will get them from a boat if you find some. The only time I went boat fishing for cod we caught lots of conger. Uhg.

Stone Pier, Boldnor,
On the flood.
Whole squid.
Couple of Anchovies, tied on the squid with thread.
If there's not too much weed.
Try the rod light trick at night,
But I never told you that.

Yep, Boldnor near Yarmouth .
just walk down the path, turn right, you can't miss it, big pile of stonework in the sea, I think it was something to do with Boldnor Battery, but I may be wrong.
Also good for Place and Bass at this time of year, may be a tad early for Cod as it is so mild.
Bloody hell you lot will be asking me where Crudle Peir is next, the best Bass spot on the South Coast!

Two things mate that work well boat fishing in Sussex.
1 Traces a) On springs tides use short traces and nail that bait hard on the bottom b). On neap tides use longer traces and allow the bait to go where the tide dictates
2. Bait
Has to be the cuttle sausage.
Remove the backbone and cut the semi frozen cuttle in half, including head. Then grab some elastic cotton and tie the half sections nice and tight, making sure to keep the semi frozen juices and stomack inside the flesh. Use this bait on a 6.0 or 8.0 pennel rig. The juices will slowly seep out from the bait and attract Cod, it is also a good way to battle against the pest species without having to change baits every ten minutes.

This is what they look like if you can get your self up here I can guarantee you will bust your cherry on the Cod. These ones have been wrapped in batter by now.
