171lb common skate ........... caught on Davy Holts boat "Catchalot" at Lochaline in Scotland...........in 530 feet of water My tag was put on & the fish was released

1 hour 50 min ......................my arms were killing me ......I couldnt even lift a cup of tea after that for ages.

Wht made it worce was that when a skate comes to the surface they turn upside down , and sometimes dive again ..........guess what this one done just that .............I could have cried .................my back was was starting to take the stain ..................even though I had a harnes on as well as as a brace ......................boy!...... do these fish fight .

I can only imagine the power in such a mass & weight of fish, funny because I found thornbacks & blondes dont give up much of a fight at all.

Now thats a fish!! wicked, whats the success rate with that skipper?what time of year is best for these? thinking of maybe having a go!!they look that good,would love some back ache......

That mark doesn't look very far from the shore either. Nice fish mate a true giant. Some one told me once that you had them off the IOW until the banks were dredged away,dont know if thats true though Im too young to know for sure

Mind you the book was printed 1968
