Big Sean and I tend to go for lug, especially Inn on the Beach. However, you have not listed slipper limpet. I rate it highly after a storm because it is highly likely that there will be some lying around on beaches like Hayling and Eastney and bass and whiting are likely to be looking for it. After one autumn storm last year, one of our locals had 17 bass in a 4 hour session using limpet. We were picking up a fair few whiting at night with it too.

I went for good ole squid! Freeze it, re-freeze it, re-freeze it again....give the stuff as much abuse as you can and it will keep on catching. Obviously the fresher the better but i never sling in unused squid. My PB bass was caught on freezer burned squid that was actually yellow! As a good scratching bait in the winter you would find lug and a thin strip of squid VERY hard to beat!

from the shore its rag , slippers, or squid in shore on the boat (solent)= squid , sandeel, and rag cuttle for cod out deeper i went for cuttle cos it can take a battering that the dogs and pout give it out in the deeper water so the is somthink left for the cod if the is one around

Why don't you have bacon rind on the list. A kid had a 3lb bass with it on Hayling back in the summer! True!

I think it really depends on what your after.
However, the bait i find catches the most variety is probably ragworm.

Depends what your fishing for I suppose but for the beach I think hermit crabs are a topper for most species, especially cod and bass.
