Bait suggestions
I live inland - the chance of getting Rag around Andover is pretty slim - and Tescos just haven’t got that kinda range of foods in yet.
Most of my fishing opportunities come by chance rather than by planning, and I find it impossible to pack frozen baits with me on the off-chance I may get a chance to get a rod wet. Equally, I can’t get to a local tackle shop to stock up on the day either - as most of my fishing is done at night - eg “hey it’s midnight, I have a couple of hours to go fishing as I’m on the coast anyway” (the tackle stays in the car as a rule).
So I invariably end up using inferior baits - petrified sandeel being my last try at something that would be there when i needed it without thawing out and stinking out the car if forgotten.
And because i don’t know if I can get a chance until usually very late at night, scouring the local beach for something by torchlight isn’t always possible.
My next experiment will probably be with a jar of shellfish in brine ....... re-useable, no need to fridge it, spill proof.
So - you see my predicament ..........
Has anyone tried the shellfish in brine in a jar - or indeed have any other suggestions that may be worth a try (Donner kebab doesn’t count - been there - tried that - lol).
I realise this may be a somewhat unorthadox approach to fishing - but it’s all I have to work with right now, so I have to keep trying.
Cummon guys - what’s the craziest bait you’ve ever caught on - or found available at short notice when the shops are shut ?

Agree about bread and Cheese, Bass and Mullet will take these also heard of quite a few Bass coming out on Raw chicken. I use to use Cooked prawns, Pouting and Whiting Use to love them, they were unpeeled but reckon a packet from Tesco's has got to be worth a try. Good luck!

Old geezer I knew used to get bass regularly on chicken scraps in Portsmouth Harbour. Apparently the bass got used to eating kitchen scraps thrown overboard from the continental ferries. Also, blokes out fishing in Solent one day and catching black bream. Matey has a tin of sweet corn for his lunch, gets fed up with it and chucks it overboard. Next two bream to come up both had sweetcorn in their guts. Have I tried sweet corn on say size 4 hooks yet for black bream? - No but I keep meaning to. 13 year old was fishing Langstone Harbour Entrance with bit of bacon rind this summer (they all do it don't they?). He was just as amazed as I to hook a 3 lb bass (true). Another bloke catches black bream regularly with pork luncheon meat; apparently some bream don't know whether they are bream or carp.

I knew of a bloke that used to fish a pier local to me with fresh 'big' prawns picked up from the fish counter at the supermarket, he had some really good bass.

Get yourself a decent coolbox and some ice packs, and put it in the car when you think you may have a chance to go. A good one will keep bait frozen for at least 12 hours....try Coleman or Iceytek as a start.................I know I wouldn't feel too confident using sausages for bait!

just a stab in the dark........slugs........garden snails bound on with elastic.or if you really want to go the bait in a jar way then slipper limpet can on its day be fantastic. you can freeze it, but i have known anglers to keep it in vinegar and catch as well as those using it fresh........it was a very long time ago though................however limpet is definatly best a few days old......then shell it and dry on newspaper......at this point i would freeze it . 25 Years ago i came second in a beach comp known as the titbits comp.It was a charity comp ran in april on the open beaches between boscombe and double dykes 100 plus anglers would turn out for a days fishing where very little would be caught, usually. The previous year the competition was won with a pipe fish of seven eigths of an ounce. At £125 for the winner this fish held the record of the most amount of money won for the lowest weight by an officially reconised nfsa ran competition. However the year i came second you needed seven pound of flounders to frame. Both the winner and i had 13 flounders all caught on limpet.he beat me by six ounces. The fish were no more than twenty yards out and wouldnt even look at rag worm..... What made this day etched in my memory was the fact that i had so many of my freinds and fellow anglers come up for a chat during the eight hour comp....It wasnt so they could watch a master demonstrating his craft......i had two topless beauties sunbathing less than six foot in front of my rod........yep sliperlimpet can certainly have its day

give COOKED prawns a go( pout luv e'm) or mussels(plenty of elastic!) and i totally agree with cam about the slipper limpet, it can be brilliant on it's day and if you collect, shell and freeze, it will keep really well and defrosts in a few mins(on the way to your next trip!!!) i don't think theres a perfect solution, and any array of crazy baits will catch on there day, i did try that stuff that came out a couple of years ago(can't remember the name) it was sold in a packet, and was lumious green, in small pieces, and looked like cardboard, stayed on the hook for ever AND i even caught a few fish on it!( dogs and pout) maybe that would be the perfect solution for u? good luck!

iv had bass, mullet and even a flounder on bread ,ham, bacon, chicken and even cornedbeef. it works best around places that the public chuck food in to the sea like near resturant or a car park near a macdonals(ie town quay or hamble quay), garden worms can do very well for flounders in upper estuarys and also eels will pick them up it also remembering that slipper limpets can be refrozen so if you cant get out just re freeze again and again. infact a m8 of mine reconds older smeller slippers are better than fresh. another thing you can do is lure fish under lights for bass and pollock(it does work) good luck

Interesting about the lights.on a number of threads i have read about anglers being very unhappy about light especially with bass. I know very little about bass fishing but as a coarse angler i couldnt agree more. However back in 1971 we would hang three anchor lamps over the side of bournemouth pier.Float fishing mackeral stip, brit, or sandees as sandeels were known we caught mackies ,pollock, small bream and the occasional bass, seatrout, and shad....yeah shad.....christ i was fourteen then .Thing is those fishing outside the light caught very little. Slipper limpet scrounged fom the bins on the pier would stink to high heaven and go tough from the sun and the absorbant newspaper we would peel them off......We caught a lot of dab of stinking limpet.Happy days.....strange the other limpet prized from rocks would catch nothing...

I think lights on a man made structure that don't move around are accepted by the fish more than perhaps walking down a deserted wild beach wearing a head light would be - but there's probably a hundred other unknowns to factor in for a complete answer to that one.
Great bait suggestions guys - and much appreciated - I'll be trying out a few over the coming weeks and post a new thread on the results.

was out on stepbrothers boat eating my lunch (a scotch egg) because i had been using bait and my fingers were somewhat smelly i decided to put the piece of scotch egg i was holding on the hook for a laugh almost immediatly had a superb bite but missed it i guess if its meaty and has a scent then its got a chance as a bait

remember plaice fishing with my old mate ken clayton many moons ago .KEN STARTED CHUCKLING TO HIMSELF .He had his back to me and lowered back down his spoon rig .What is amusing you know ken i enquired,OH NOTHING MUCH IM JUST TRYING A NEW BAIT HE REPLIED.what new bait i enquired ....CANT SAY WAS THE SOMEWHAT EXPECTED REPLY.come on ken what have you put on the hook you crazy demented fool.......Guess said ken Over the next five minites ken replied nope to every suggestion. He then recieved a rattle and very soon a dab of just over the pound mark was swung onboard. There was the answer ken had removed some branston pickle from his sarnies and caught a dab.A month later we were fishing boscombe pier and it was a whiting a chuck sometimes three whiting a chuck .A young lad remarked they seem to be accepting everything.THE BRANSTON PICKLE TALE WAS TOLD.the young angler went over to his bag and anounced he was going to top that no problem....he at least equalled it by catching a whiting on an orange flavoured fruit pastel..........sometimes fishing is crazy, and those that partake crazier still........beats watching eastenders though....
