Yeah they don't usually feed (or do much at all actually ) whilst waiting to peel. sorry but your wrong, shore crab(greenbacks)will sit under rocks/weed etc until the process is done, spiders will feed upto the point they start taking on water to pop the shell.if you go to any break water with a baited net(brighton marina for one)you will pull up peeling spiders,i personally prefer the night time low water way.....hundreds to choose from ;D every year the spider molt attracts countless bait hunters on brighton marina,no doubt you've never collected spiders

collected 3 fish crates full and 75% were peelers and the rest were soft backs DE lunged and shelled and vac packed them. When doing the leg test only kept if they had the claw on the end and it was black not brown is this right or did I threw back loads of good ones to.Also threw back the jelly's legs and claws are these any good as bait? Andy the colour of the spike will vary between brown to almost black, the main thing is 'has it got the claw'if it has then theres a 90+% chance it's a peeler,i say 90+% because every now and then you'll come across one or two which are'nt quite ready to peel, you'll now it when you find one because you'll end up with a big meaty mushy lump as opposed to a perfect crab. you can collect them with a baited net but i prefer to do it at low water, they tend to be well on the way to peeling, thus easier to peel, also you will find the jellies just starting to pop the shell, the crinklies i leave alone. so yes you probably threw a good few peelers back ;D

here's a pic of some spider peelers you can see the old shell just waiting to pop of! so these are prime for pheromone release i guess?
